Gardenshed.net designed, built and maintains one of Brighton's busiest city guies. The website focuses on the city's thriving LGBT scene, providing event listings, photographs and a directory of businesses and services. Over the ten years or so the website has become a vital part of the city's gay scene.
The website has its own custom administration system to make adding new listings, photographs and business information easy. It aslo has a second admin system (the "business lounge") allowing organisations to update their own details, add event information and purchase advertising through Google checkout.
REALBrighton was one of the first websites to make use of Google's interactive mapping system. The homepage displays a map showing pins with today's events. Users can click on the map pin to find out what's on at that location, or they can click on the details below to view that event on the map. Gardenshed.net used this same system to host the Brighton Fringe Festival's online mapping.
Through the back office system businesses and community organisations are able to add details of their events. These can take the form of weekly/repeating listings (eg: every Monday is "Bar150" at Charles Street). They can also add details of one off events - choosing for these to override their repeat listings... Listings are then shown on their profile page, on the homepage of REALBrighton, on the listings pages and - where the business is hosting a website with Gardenshed.net, their listings will also appear on their own site. Listings are automatically removed when they are out of date.
